The Subaru Legacy Stacks Up Against the Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Chevy Malibu, Toyota Camry & Honda Accord

Subaru Legacy vs. Nissan Altima

  • The Subaru Legacy comes with standard symmetrical all-wheel drive. The Nissan Altima gets only front-wheel-drive.
  • Like the Subaru Legacy, the Nissan Altima received a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Association. But the Nissan Altima received four stars in the rollover category where the Legacy got five.
  • The Altima starts at just $22,500 - that's $500 more than the $21,995 an entry-level Legacy costs.
  • The Subaru Legacy has a 18.5-gallon gas tank; the Nissan Altima's is smaller by about half a gallon.
  • All Legacy models come with a standard backup camera as well as daytime running lights - both feature unavailable on base Altima models.
  • The Subaru Legacy comes with a standard 6.2-inch touchscreen multimedia system, where the entry-level Altima only has a standard analog radio interface.

Subaru Legacy vs. Ford Fusion

  • The Ford Fusion does come with available AWD. However, it is available only in higher trims, and for extra cost.
  • Base model Fusion sedans feature standard analog media interfaces, where base model Legacy sedans have touchscreen infotainment systems.
  • The Ford Fusion has a base MSRP of $22,610; that's about $600 greater than the cost of a Subaru Legacy.
  • While AWD generally decreases fuel efficiency, the Subaru Legacy gets 25/34 city/highway combined mpg. The front-wheel drive Ford Fusion only gets 21/32 mpg, which decreases even further if you add AWD.
  • The 16.5-gallon gas tank equipped on all Fusion models has a full two gallons less than the 2017 Subaru Legacy, meaning the Ford will require more frequent fill-ups than the Subaru.

Subaru Legacy vs. Chevrolet Malibu

  • The Chevrolet Malibu, like most other midsize sedans, doesn't offer AWD at any trim.
  • The Chevrolet Malibu received four stars in the rollover category - a lower ranking than the perfect score the Legacy got.
  • Drivers with a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu will spend a lot of time at the gas station. Its fuel tank only holds 13 gallons. That's a full 5.5 gallons less than what the Legacy packs.
  • The base engine in the Chevrolet Malibu gives out 160 horsepower. The base engine in the Subaru Legacy gives out 175 horsepower.
  • Drivers looking for a little extra kick will enjoy the highest level engine in the  Chevrolet Malibu, which gives 250 horsepower. They will enjoy the highest level engine in the Subaru Legacy more, though, as it provides 256 horsepower.
  • Rearview cameras come standard on all Malibu trims but the base trim, but the Legacy gets a camera on every trim.
  • The base level trim of Chevrolet Malibu does not come with a touchscreen. If you want a base model with a sizeable touchscreen, the Subaru Legacy is the clear choice.
