This midsize sedan has a whole lot to offer, including standard symmetrical all-wheel-drive which is a relative rarity in this segment.

The Subaru Legacy is a fantastic vehicle. Reliable, well-equipped at any trim (with many available), and efficient, most anyone to drive one of these Subaru models winds up loving them. How do you know if the Subaru Legacy is right for you? A test-drive is always a good idea. But for the meantime, allow us to fill you in on how this new Subaru model compares to competitors like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, and Chevy Malibu. For comparison's sake, we'll use base-level models in most instances to give a clear sense of where the Legacy earns its superiority.

The Subaru Legacy Stacks Up Against the Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Chevy Malibu, Toyota Camry & Honda Accord

Subaru Legacy vs. Nissan Altima

  • The Subaru Legacy comes with standard symmetrical all-wheel drive. The Nissan Altima offers intelligent all-wheel drive but you have to pay extra to get it.
  • Like the Subaru Legacy, the Nissan Altima offers a host of driver assistance features that help keep an extra pair of eyes on the roads at all times. Unlike the Subaru Legacy, however, the Nissan Altima offers far fewer standard safety features and are only available as pricier, optional features.
  • The Altima starts at just $24,100 - that's almost $2,000 more than the $22,745 an entry-level Legacy costs.
  • The Subaru Legacy has an 18.5-gallon gas tank; the Nissan Altima's is smaller by about 2.3 gallons.
  • The Subaru Legacy comes with a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen multimedia system while also offering an 11.6-inch touchscreen on higher models. Nissan only offers an eight-inch touchscreen on the entry-level Altima as well as the higher trim levels.

Subaru Legacy vs. Ford Fusion

  • The Ford Fusion does come with available AWD. However, it is available only in higher trims, and for extra cost.
  • Base model Fusion sedans feature the standard SYNC® system without a touchscreen, where base model Legacy sedans have touchscreen infotainment systems equipped standard.
  • The Ford Fusion has a base MSRP of $23,170; that's about $400 greater than the cost of a Subaru Legacy.
  • While AWD generally decreases fuel efficiency, the Subaru Legacy gets 27/35 city/highway combined mpg. The front-wheel drive Ford Fusion only gets 21/31 mpg, which decreases even further if you add AWD.
  • The 16.5-gallon gas tank equipped on all front-wheel drive Fusion models has a full two gallons less than the 2020 Subaru Legacy, meaning the Ford will require more frequent fill-ups than the Subaru.

Subaru Legacy vs. Chevrolet Malibu

  • The Chevrolet Malibu, like most other midsize sedans, doesn't offer AWD at any trim.
  • The Chevrolet Malibu offers plenty of safety features that assist drivers but you need to upgrade to more expensive trim configurations to access them. The Subaru Legacy equips them standard and without charging you extra.
  • Drivers with a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu will spend a lot of time at the gas station. Its fuel tank only holds 15.8 gallons. That's a full 2.3 gallons less than what the Legacy packs.
  • The base engine in the Chevrolet Malibu gives out 160 horsepower. The base engine in the Subaru Legacy gives out 182 horsepower.
  • Drivers looking for a little extra kick will enjoy the highest level engine in the  Chevrolet Malibu, which gives 250 horsepower. They will enjoy the highest level engine in the Subaru Legacy more, though, as it provides 260 horsepower.
  • The base level trim of Chevrolet Malibu comes with an eight-inch touchscreen but not much more than that. If you want an option to upgrade to an 11.6-inch touchscreen,  the Subaru Legacy is the clear choice.

Subaru Legacy vs. Toyota Camry

  • The Legacy comes in at a lower starting price than the Camry, saving you a considerable amount of money.
  • The Legacy has more front headroom and total passenger space than the Camry - a must if traveling with children or friends.
  • The Legacy offers more cargo space than the Camry in all models, making it ideal for longer trips.

Subaru Legacy vs. Honda Accord

  • The entry-level Subaru Legacy costs less than a base-model Accord by almost a thousand dollars.
  • With standard all-wheel drive, Legacy sedans offer better traction and control than the front-wheel-drive powered Honda Accord.
  • Like other sedans, the Accord offers a smaller fuel tank than the Legacy, requiring more frequent fill-ups.
  • The Legacy offers similar interior space as the Accord does but upgrading to higher trim levels shrinks the interior of the Honda. The Subaru Legacy doesn't sacrifice space for luxury in any model.
